What Restore does

Tapping Restore in the app asks Apple, Google or our own billing service for purchases attached to the account you are signed into, and unlocks them again. It never starts a new purchase and never charges you.

Where you bought it is where you manage it

App Store purchases live in Settings › Apple Account › Subscriptions. Google Play purchases live in Play Store › Payments & subscriptions. When paying in bitcoin opens — our own channel, and the only payment we take outside the stores — a year paid that way is managed on espress.coffee with the same Espress account you signed in with.

The free trial

[ PENDING · ONE TRIAL OR TWO ] Seven days, every feature, once per account. A store trial converts into a paid subscription unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends; the price and billing period are shown before you confirm. Unused trial time is forfeited if you subscribe early.

Renewal and cancellation

Monthly and yearly plans renew automatically at the then-current price until you cancel. Canceling stops the next charge and leaves your access running to the end of the period already paid for. A year bought with bitcoin does not auto-renew at all — we send a reminder before it lapses and you decide.

Refunds

Store purchases are refunded by Apple or Google under their own policies — we cannot issue them on your behalf. A bitcoin payment is refunded in bitcoin, to an address you give us: the same number of satoshis you paid comes back, and Espress pays the network fee. [ PENDING · EU / UK WITHDRAWAL ]

If Restore finds nothing

Check that you are signed into the same Apple Account, Google account or Espress account you bought with. If it is still missing, send the store receipt or the transaction id to support@espress.coffee and we will attach the entitlement manually.

What the service is

Espress recognizes packaged coffee from its barcode and returns a rating, reviews, a flavor profile, roast level, origin, brewing suggestions and a personal match score. It is an advisory tool, not a shop: we do not sell you the coffee.

Your account

You must be 16 or older. You sign in with Apple or with an email address, and there is no Espress password: you get in through Apple, or with a one-time code we send to that address. Keep access to your Apple Account or your inbox — it is how you get back in.

Scan results are estimates

Recognition is automated and the catalog is compiled from roasters, importers and our community, so a match can be wrong, incomplete or out of date. Always read the physical packaging for ingredients, allergens, caffeine content and best-before dates. Nothing in the app is dietary, medical or nutritional advice.

Ratings and content you add

Your reviews, notes and the bag photos you send when you add a coffee stay yours. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive license to store and display them inside Espress, including in aggregate ratings. Post only what you have the right to post, keep it honest, and expect us to remove reviews that are fake, paid for, unlawful or abusive.

Roaster names and packaging

Brand names, bag artwork and logos belong to their owners and appear in Espress only to identify the product you scanned. Espress is independent and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any roaster. Roasters who want a listing corrected or removed can write to legal@espress.coffee.

What belongs to Espress

The app, this website, the Espress name, the cup mark, our illustrations and our icons are ours. So are the texts and images we write and make ourselves; our translations of a roaster’s or a brand’s words are ours only as translations, and the original stays theirs. The catalog is ours as a compilation — the way its coffees are gathered, checked and arranged — and so are the Espress score, the match, the rankings and every figure we work out from ratings.

All of it is reserved to Espress. You may not copy it, republish it, mirror it, use it to build a rival database, or use it to train or test an AI model — whether you reach it through the app, this website, a shared coffee page or our servers directly. Clause 07 already rules out scraping and reselling; this covers everything else. Sharing a coffee’s link or a screenshot for your own, non-commercial use is fine: that is what the share button is for.

It does not cover what is not ours to reserve: what roasters and brands own — their data, photos, logos and bag art, including inside the pictures we redraw of a package (clause 05); plain facts, such as a coffee’s origin or roast; data from Open Food Facts, which stays under the ODbL, and its photos, under CC BY-SA (see Data sources); the reviews and photos people add, which stay theirs (clause 04); GS1 barcodes and other companies’ marks. Nor does it limit what the law lets anyone do without asking, and as part of these terms it binds people who use Espress, not someone who only opens a shared coffee page.

Fair use of the app

Personal use only. Do not scrape or bulk-export the catalog, run automated scanning at scale, resell our data, or reverse engineer the recognition service. We may rate-limit or suspend accounts that do.

Payment

Prices, trials, renewals and refunds are set out in Subscription, restore & refunds above, which forms part of these terms. Store purchases are also subject to Apple's or Google's terms.

Availability and changes

Catalog coverage varies by country and features evolve. We may change or retire parts of the service; if a change materially reduces what you paid for, you may cancel and we will refund the unused part of the period. Changes to these terms are published on this page, with a new effective date, before they apply. The app sends no notice of its own.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, our total liability is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or any right you have as a consumer that cannot be waived.

Ending the agreement, and law

You can stop at any time by canceling and deleting your account in Profile. We may suspend an account that breaches these terms, with notice where possible. The law of the State of Texas governs the agreement and the courts of Hood County, Texas, have jurisdiction, except that consumers keep the protection of the mandatory law of their own country of residence.

Who is responsible

Espress, [ CONTACT ADDRESS ], is the data controller. Write to privacy@espress.coffee for anything in this policy, including data protection requests.

The camera and your scans

The camera reads the barcode on your device, and the picture never leaves it. Only the barcode number is sent, to find the coffee; your scan history stores which coffee it was, not an image. The one photo that does leave your phone is a photo of a bag, and only when you add a coffee missing from the catalog — it goes to private storage, where only the people reviewing it can see it. You can refuse or revoke the camera permission in system settings and use search instead — the rest of the app keeps working.

What else we hold

Your account identifier — your email address, or with Sign in with Apple the address Apple shares, which may be a relay address ending in @privaterelay.appleid.com — your public @handle, your ratings, notes and saved coffees, your subscription status, and your language and country. We collect no diagnostics, no crash reports and no analytics. We do not track your location and we do not read your photo library beyond the images you pick.

Payments

We never see or store card numbers. App Store and Play purchases are handled by Apple and Google, and RevenueCat tells us which plan your account holds. Bitcoin payments are settled on a public chain: we keep the invoice and the transaction id to prove your year is paid, and nothing else.

Why we are allowed to

To give you the service you subscribed to, including reviewing a coffee you add to the catalog (contract); to prevent fraud and abuse (legitimate interest); and to keep invoices as tax law requires (legal obligation).

Who else sees it

Only the processors that run the service, each bound by contract: Supabase (database, sign-in and the private storage for bag photos), Brevo (email delivery), Apple (Sign in with Apple and App Store purchases), RevenueCat (subscription status — it receives your account id) and Open Food Facts (barcode lookup). We do not sell personal data, we do not share it with advertisers, and there is no third-party advertising SDK in the app.

How long we keep it

Scans and ratings until you delete them or close your account. Deleting your account is immediate: the account and everything attached to it are erased at once, with no grace period. One thing stays — a coffee you added that was already accepted into the shared catalog remains there, with nothing linking it to you. Invoices are kept for as long as tax law requires. Your rights

Access, correction, deletion, portability, restriction and objection. Profile › Delete account removes everything from inside the app; privacy@espress.coffee answers within 30 days. You can also complain to your national data protection authority — [ SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY ].

Signing in with Apple

Apple gives us your name once, the first time you sign in; we use it only to suggest your public @handle, which you can change in Profile. If you choose Hide My Email, the relay address Apple creates is your account identifier and our mail reaches you through Apple. We also keep one Apple token for exactly one purpose: revoking the authorization with Apple when you delete your account, which Apple requires. Espress is not for children under 16.

What the app stores

Only local storage on your device: your session, your language, a marker that you have made your first scan, and your recent searches. Your onboarding answers and your scan history are kept with your account, not on the phone. None of it is a cookie, none of it is shared, and clearing the app clears it.

What this site sets

No cookies. This site sets none and stores nothing else in your browser either — no local storage, no session storage. Nothing on this site signs you in, so there is no session to keep.

Analytics

None. This site loads no analytics of any kind and counts nothing. If we ever add anything that needs consent, you will be asked before it loads, not after.

Payments

There is no card checkout. Paying in bitcoin sets no cookie at all.

Your choice

On this site there is nothing to accept, refuse or block, which is why you saw no banner. In the app, deleting it clears everything listed in 01.

Open Food Facts

Some coffees reach Espress first from Open Food Facts, the open food database at openfoodfacts.org: name, brand, size and barcode. Espress contains data from Open Food Facts, available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. Individual entries are under the Database Contents License. Photos from Open Food Facts

A bag picture that comes from Open Food Facts was taken by one of its contributors and is under Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0. Under that picture, the coffee page names the author and links to the original. We do not change these pictures beyond resizing, and we do not put them on shared cards, where there is no room for the credit.

Roasters and brands

A description marked From the roaster or From the brand is quoted from that company's own page, with a link to it. It belongs to them and is shown only to describe the product.

Espress and its people

Everything else — the photos people add of a bag, the reviewed product details, ratings and notes — is written by Espress users and our reviewers. Roaster names and bag artwork belong to their owners; see clause 05 of the Terms.
